Wednesday marked another landmark first for New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s tenure, as Melissa Mark-Viverito became the first Hispanic to be elected to City Council, New York City’s second most-powerful office.
Puerto Rican-born and East Harlem bred, Mark-Viverito is best known for helping form the City Council’s Progressive Caucus. A fiery Liberal, Melissa enters with the backing of a unified office, having been elected by a unanimous voter after an intense lobbying campaign by Mayor de Blasio. I’m excited to see what she and the Mayor will accomplish in this upcoming term. Congratulations!
