The Fix-It Shop Closes its Doors; Sonia Manzano to Retire from Sesame Street

Sonia Manzano, or “Maria” as most of us know, is retiring after 44 years on Sesame Street.

My childhood!

sonia-monzano-sesame-streetManzano made the announcement at the American Library Association’s Conference in San Francisco. Many fans of the beloved character expressed their sadness at the news of her departure, white Sonia remains positive an upbeat, assuring us we haven’t seen the last of her;

Many fans have had the honor of growing up with Maria, as Manzano weaved her own life into the character. Her real-life pregnancy was written in the show, even going so far as to explain breastfeeding in one episode. Viewers saw Maria date, marry, become a mother and a business owner, all while singing along with their favorite puppets.

Sonia’s memoir, “Becoming Maria: Love and Chaos in the South Bronx,” is slated for release later this year, and I’m certain this is just the beginning of what will be an exciting new chapter. I’m certain she’s not done giving us life lessons, and I wish her the best!

Donald Trump-Media Pariah After Voicing ‘Derogatory’ Views on Latinos

In what has turned out to be a real-life version of “A Day Without a Mexican“, Donald Trump has found himself on the receiving end of his famous “You’re Fired!”

TrumpYoureFired

After a week which saw him commenting on border control with gems such as “They are bringing drugs, and bringing crime, and their rapists.”, then doubling down once confronted, “The Donald” has since had a front-row seat to the crumbling of his cushy media empire.

For the past week Trump has steadfastly refused to budge as he “lost” his Miss Universe contract with Univision (which he responded to with the pettiest of panache),  and saw both hosts, performers and judges for the Miss Universe Pageant resign with just weeks to go before the telecast. But apparently the final straw floated down to NBC after his clarifying statements on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday, as the network has released a statement cutting all ties:

“At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values. Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump. To that end, the annual Miss USA and Miss Universe Pageants, which are part of a joint venture between NBC and Trump, will no longer air on NBC. In addition, as Mr. Trump has already indicated, he will not be participating in The Apprentice on NBC. Celebrity Apprentice is licensed from Mark Burnett‘s United Artists Media Group and that relationship will continue.”

Trump famously has been very vocal on social media regarding his stance on immigration and his recent comments. We will definitely be watching to see what the “presidential hopeful” has to say now that he has discovered when it comes to Latinos in America-you mess with one, you mess with the whole family.

UPDATE: Donald Trump has responded NBC’s statement with one of his own, again using social media:

I admittedly like the idea of the show and will definitely take a look when it comes out, it looks like it has a positive theme for a change and it would be great to see what she’s been up to!

What do you think? Will you be tuning into the show?
