Sonia Manzano, or “Maria” as most of us know, is retiring after 44 years on Sesame Street.
My childhood!
Manzano made the announcement at the American Library Association’s Conference in San Francisco. Many fans of the beloved character expressed their sadness at the news of her departure, white Sonia remains positive an upbeat, assuring us we haven’t seen the last of her;
Many fans have had the honor of growing up with Maria, as Manzano weaved her own life into the character. Her real-life pregnancy was written in the show, even going so far as to explain breastfeeding in one episode. Viewers saw Maria date, marry, become a mother and a business owner, all while singing along with their favorite puppets.
Sonia’s memoir, “Becoming Maria: Love and Chaos in the South Bronx,” is slated for release later this year, and I’m certain this is just the beginning of what will be an exciting new chapter. I’m certain she’s not done giving us life lessons, and I wish her the best!
